A Turmeric Piña Colada Smoothie

pina colada smoothie

This smoothie’s name is a mouthful. But if anyone ever mastered Mary Poppins’ “Super-Cali-Fragilistic-Expialidocious” this smoothie title should be a walk in the park!

So Grandma was right all along; turmeric is a powerful natural remedy that helps fight off inflammation. If you ever wondered why curry is yellow, oh well, that’s thanks to turmeric. Turmeric was also behind my mother’s famous yellow and garlic minced beef rice that she served at every holiday table; from Easter to Christmas. But this post is going to show you a practical way to incorporate this wonderful nutritional supplement into an every day drink that tastes great. The secret behind turmeric lies in curcumin; the main component in turmeric. Curcumin is where all the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits stem from, and it has been used for centuries in ancient India before going mainstream.

At the height of my autoimmune illness, I started taking turmeric supplements along with Omega 3 capsules at the advice of a naturopath in a bid to help myself get better. I quickly found out turmeric capsules weren’t for me, as they would upset my stomach. I felt nauseous after taking them, too. But there’s a clever way to bypass these side effects by mixing turmeric into your food, or so I found. I now mix it in my smoothies at least 2-3 times per week and I know I am putting something good into my body.

tropical smoothie

I am in love with this “golden glow wellness smoothie” for a number of reasons; namely the citrusy, tropical pineapple taste, the myriad of health benefits and the incredibly easy recipe. Can you taste the turmeric? Not at all! The taste is neutralized with all the fruit, I promise. This smoothie tastes like a virgin piña colada. Folks, am not making this up! The fresh ginger gives this drink a really nice kick, but if ginger is not your thing, simply omit it. As for your liquid, you can try this with soy or almond milk. Soy makes for a particularly creamy smoothie. The 1/2 cup of dairy-free vanilla coconut yogurt mixed with the cup full of frozen pineapple is what gives this drink that “piña colada” allure & taste. I love it & hope you do, too!

Piña Colada: Golden Glow Wellness Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of fresh or frozen pineapple (I use frozen for a thicker smoothie!)
  • 1 large orange, peeled and sliced
  • 1 ripe frozen banana, sliced (peel & slice before you freeze!)
  • 1/2 cup of vanilla dairy-free coconut yogurt OR coconut greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup of almond or soy milk *carrageenan free
  • 1 tsp of ground turmeric
  • 1 tbsp of flaxseed oil (optional)
  • 1 tsp freshly grated ginger (optional)

Instructions:

Blend everything on “High” until smooth. This smoothie is thicker than most, and that’s the purpose! Just make sure the frozen bananas & pineapples blend in. Frozen fruit plus a little ice add great thickness to any smoothie! I usually blend for no longer than 25-30 seconds. All blenders vary.

Piña Colada: Golden Glow Wellness Smoothie

Ingredientes

(opcional)

Instrucciones:

    1. @Alyssa Kefir would be more than an acceptable substitute for yogurt, a better one in fact! I don’t consume yogurt that has dairy in it. But I do consume Kefir and the fermented milk allows for much easier digestion. I partnered with Rolling Meadow Dairy to promote Kefir week (25th-29th), so please do check for an Instagram post this week for a neat little Kefir Smoothie recipe. Have a great day!

      1. OH AWESOME! Cannot wait to see the recipe. Already following on Instagram :). I wasn’t sure how kefir would change the flavor/consistency of this smoothie, so I thought I’d see. Thanks!

  1. This smoothie is amazing. I could drink it every single day. I tried both versions – with/without ginger. To be honest, I wasn’t a ginger fan. But ever since I made your Pear & Ginger Crisp I’ve changed my mind about ginger. In this recipe I wouldn’t skip it because it puts all those lovely flavours together. 👌 I just can’t go wrong with your recipes 😉👏

    1. Thank you so much, Lenka!! Your comments and feedback always make my day. Agreed; that tiny piece of ginger brings out all the flavours together. This is one of my favourite, too. 🙂
