A Thick, Frothy Green “Milkshake”!

I never thought the day would come when I would willingly pick a green drink over a cup of coffee because am feeling tired & in need of an energy boost. Well, I fuel up with smoothies these days. Not to say I don’t drink coffee, because I still do. I drink it out of sheer enjoyment, just not as a “pick me up”.

As I write this, am happily typing from the comfort of my parents home- while on a lightning visit with my children. I am enjoying some sunshine (much needed vitamin C) + open toe shoes once more; while everyone back in Canada starts to bundle up as the first frost of the season has arrived. I have been feasting on tacos, tamales, middle eastern food & all the fare I grew up with. #SmoothieGoals remain strong every morning. It’s my time to energize & cleanse. I feel so alive and awake after drinking a glass of fruits, proteins & fats.

This thick, frothy “green milkshake” brought me back to my very first days in Canada. One of the first international cuisines I tried was Vietnamese. They have the most scrumptious avocado milkshake I have ever tried; think green, creamy, sweet, & dessert-like indulgence. I soon learned the secret was milk, condensed milk & a hefty amount of white sugar. All of the above are things I no longer consume. But I’ve managed to recreate those flavors within the confines of my new health parameters. I kid you not- this stuff tastes great!!! Not only that, but it does your body good. It’s nutrient dense, packed with healthy fats (coconut butter, banana, & avocado) & incredibly easy to prep. Can’t find coconut butter? Try coconut oil or coconut manna. Flaxseed oil also works wonders to add healthy fats and make your smoothies creamy & deliciously good for you. Are you ready? Let’s go!

Ingredients- Makes 1 Glass

  • 1/2 a large avocado (pitted)
  • 1 ripe frozen banana (peel & slice before freezing)
  • 1 tbsp. coconut butter (or flaxseed oil or coconut manna)
  • 1 cup of organic baby spinach
  • 1 cup of coconut water
  • 1 tbsp. of hemp hearts or chia seeds for protein
  • Raw Honey or Agave to taste as sweeteners (optional)

Blend on high until desired consistency is achieved. For a thicker smoothie, add less coconut water & a handful of ice cubes. Enjoy the green goodness!
